Always double check your measurements

The last thing you want is to find that any finishing touches or big furniture items that you have worked into your décor doesn’t precisely fit the space. This means that when you plan to decorate your house, you should always make sure that you measure and then double-check those measurements.

This is even true when buying paint to cover the entire space. If you think that you will run short, it is always a good idea to go for more than you need, just to make sure that you don’t run out halfway through the project.

Choose warm or cool colours…not both

If you take some time to learn about colour theory, you will find out all about cool and warm-toned colours. Balance colours that are not designed to complement each other are really hard, especially if you are trying to bring cool and warm tones together.

It is a much better idea to choose one type of colour, be that cool blues or warm yellows and use that as your accent colour. You can combine it with neutral tones to finish the room, but the main focus should always be on that particular colour palate.

Keep the wood simple

Wood is a popular addition to many homes, but if it is given too much of a style overhaul, it can overshadow the rest of the space. If you have a room that is likely to have lots of wooden furniture or details, the best idea is to keep it as clean and straightforward as possible.

The paint on the walls can sing rather than blend into the background against the warm wooden tones.

Never forget the ceiling

We know that you don’t often stand in a room and look up, but that doesn’t mean that you should forget about the ceiling. In fact, in some of the most interesting home design ideas that we have seen, the ceiling is the star of the show.

Bright colours, bold patterns, and even metallic touches can work well on a ceiling and transform a more neutral space into one that is eye-catching and bold.

Play with textures

It is almost commonplace to see how colours can be brought together to create a coordinated room. But you can also see how textures can come together too. Velvet and wood, ceramics and chrome, see what happens when you bring them together and how they can transform your space without the need for a complete decorating project.
