Buy the essentials first

It can be tempting to dive straight in and purchase your paint ready to go, but this can sometimes be your first mistake. It is a good idea to stock up on the essentials that you know you will need, whatever colour you choose.

Not only can you catch them when they are on a special offer (and save yourself money) but then when you find your paint and some spare time, you can get straight on with the transformation rather than having to have another shopping trip planned in.

Always think about traffic

It can be easy to get wrapped up in interior design and not think about how you can use your space. If you have a room that is used a lot, such as a living room or hallway, you need to factor in how people will want to move through and use the space.

Design and style are essential, but you also need to think about how the room can function and whether or not it is going to be comfortable too.

Don’t be afraid to stay away from trends

Whilst trends are a great way to give you some inspiration and ideas when you are stuck; they are not always the right way to go. You want to make sure that the decorating you do is going to last, so you should always choose something that you love, rather than what you are being told is on-trend.

If you find that a style you like is widespread, then this is just a bonus to the process for you.

Have a timeless base and work around it

If you like to embrace trends and change things up regularly, then one top decorating tip has to be creating a timeless base that you can then workaround. Not only is this never going to go out of style, but it can be friendly and easy to make changes in the future to restyle your entire space.

Neutral tones are the best for this, as they allow for other colours, patterns, prints, and furniture items to be added in the future.
